OPEN AUDITIONS FOR DISNEY’S “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”
Auditions are announced for Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” the fully staged
Broadway musical for this year’s Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. Producer-
Director Wayne Scott has scheduled the open auditions for two Saturdays, March 10
and March 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The auditions will be held at First
Congregational Church, 2 West Olive in Redlands.
“The auditions are conducted on a first come, first served basis, without appointments,”
said Scott, “and all roles are open at this time.”
Scott emphasized that the first Saturday, March 10, will be devoted to those auditioning
for principal or choral roles. The second Saturday, March 17, will be for select
candidates who are called back and for those unable to audition on March 10. These
auditions will be conducted by appointment throughout the morning.
Those auditioning should be prepared to sing 16 measures of any familiar Broadway
musical style song, preferably from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” They must bring
their own sheet music in their key, and Scott will provide an accompanist. He will not
consider electronic sound accompaniment such as tracks on CD and no a capella
singing will be considered.
In addition to singing, Scott may ask auditioners to interpretively recite the lyrics of their
song. Memorization is not necessary as they may refer to the music. Those auditioning
may also be asked to perform a single dance routine to be taught at the auditions.
The musical will be performed with a live full orchestra and presented on Tuesday, July
24 (Public Dress Rehearsal) and Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, July
26 through 29 at the Redlands Bowl. The performances begin at 8:15 PM each
evening.
After the cast is selected, Scott and his production staff will hold a mandatory orientation
meeting the evening of Thursday, April 26 and rehearsals will begin no later than early
May. The cast will rehearse at the Redlands Bowl as often as possible.
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is the critically acclaimed Broadway smash hit musical
based on Walt Disney Pictures’ beloved 1991 Academy Award-winning animated movie.
With an Oscar-winning score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, Disney’s
“Beauty and the Beast” ran on Broadway for 5,461 performances during thirteen years
(1994-2007), becoming Broadway’s tenth longest-running production in history. An
international sensation, it has played in thirteen countries and 115 cities, grossing more
than $1.5 billion worldwide. Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” features the world famous
songs “Be Our Guest,” “Belle,” “Gaston,” “Me,” “Human Again,” “Something There” and
the hit title song, among others.
Scott encourages people interested in backstage and technical staff work to also come
on the scheduled audition days. He has already secured some positions, including
Music Conductor Nolan Livesay, Choreographer Michael Milligan, Set Designer Tim
Mahoney and Cast Coordinator Sally Inglis.
