The Story of Blue Note Records
Learn the history of Blue Note Records with JazzReach, a New York-based nonprofit “dedicated to the promotion, performance, creation and teaching of Jazz music.”
Poppin’! is an informative, finger-snappin’, foot tappin’ journey through the history of Blue Note records that aims to illuminate the impact that the label and its unparalleled roster of groundbreaking artists has had (and continues to have) on the direction of modern jazz.
Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, two jazz-loving German immigrants founded Blue Note Records in 1 939 originally to record traditional jazz and boogie-woogie music. But by the late 40’s, Lion and Wolff turned their attention to modern jazz. The rest is history.
Between 1947 and 1968, the Blue Note label produced a catalog of recordings that comprise some of the most seminal albums in jazz history. From Thelonious Monk to Art Blakey to Horace Silver to Bud Powell to jimmy Smith to Wayne Shorter to Joe Henderson to Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard just to name a few, these innovating giants of modern music explored exciting, new creative territory and in so doing, defined that classic, unmistakable Blue Note sound.
From the revolutionary recording techniques of engineer, Rudy Van Gelder, to the distinctive session photography of Francis Wolff and trailblazing graphic design of Reid Miles, the blue note record label set a benchmark for innovation, hipness and quality yet to be matched.

Too Marvelous for Words: A Celebration of Nat King Cole featuring Keith David
Sponsored by: Ken and Judith Stanford
A fun and swingin’ journey into the life and music of Nat “King” Cole. Before “The Christmas Song” and “Mona Lisa” that we know from the crooner standing in front of the orchestra, Nat was recording and playing (from the piano bench!) some of the tastiest and most influential music of the day, leaving an impact on an array of singers.
The show features as narrator/lead singer the wonderful Keith David, an award-winning actor with more than 150 film, television and stage roles to his credit. He appears in the Oscar-winning Best Pictures Platoon and Crash. As well as The Nice Guys, There’s Something About Mary, Armageddon, Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, Requiem for a Dream, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Barbershop. He has also lent his voice to such animated features as Coraline and The Princess and the Frog.
David has won two Emmy Awards for his voice-over performances in the PBS projects The War and Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. He was Emmy-nominated for his work on Ken Burns’ documentary Jazz. He is currently starring in the title role of the OWN series Greenleaf produced by and also starring Oprah Winfrey. David received a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Enlisted on Fox. His other television credits include the series Community, as well as numerous guest star appearances and voice roles.
An accomplished stage actor, David earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance on Broadway in Jelly’s Last Jam.
A lifetime fan of Nat Cole, Mr. David infuses his love of Cole into the show (written and created by Peter Smith and Robert Perkins). Lush arrangements of Nat’s most famous songs are beautifully placed in the context of American history, charming stories, and little-known anecdotes. Sweetened by these fascinating tidbits from Nat’s life, Keith David’s tribute is fun, informative, and irresistibly swinging.

The Sinatra Band Starring Matt Mauser and The Pete Jacobs Orchestra
Sponsored by: Circa 2020 and The Crossings at Redlands
As the lead singer of the popular Southern California rock band “The Tijuana Dogs”, Matt Mauser has been entertaining audiences with his unique style since the late 90′s. As the Tijuana Dogs grew in popularity, the band was often asked to perform at weddings, corporate parties, and events that required a more sophisticated style of music. It was during that time when Matt fell in love with the music of Frank Sinatra. Mesmerized by Sinatra’s smooth voice and unequaled phrasing, Matt memorized the subtleties in each song Frank sang.
Pete Jacobs was born in Claremont, California. He was a music major at Azusa Pacific University and then went on to a highly successful career as a producer and music arranger. In 1997, he formed a 16-piece big band called “Wartime Radio Revue”. This band has performed across The United States and Europe, and includes performances at New York’s Lincoln Center, Disneyland, and The Hollywood Bowl.
Their collaboration captures Sinatra at the height of his career when singing with The Count Basie Orchestra at The Sands hotel in Las Vegas. Matt’s vocal style and Pete’s genius as a conductor are a tribute to the two greats coming together.
